Translate AO3 Fics

How to Read English Fanfiction when you’re not a Native Speaker – Tips to Translate AO3 Fics

Table of Contents

📖✨ My tips to translate AO3 fanfics on mobile, desktop or kindle.

Are you dying to read all those brilliant fanfictions but English isn’t your first language?

You’re not alone.
So many readers in the fanfiction community feel the same way.

(Me? I’m currently melting over every Bridgerton fanfic I can find, especially Polin, with all the slow burns, heartbreaking angst, and soft comfort reads 😌)

The good news?
You absolutely can read and enjoy fanfiction in English (or other languages), even if you’re not fluent.

In fact, with just a few simple tricks, you can translate AO3 fanfiction easily and dive into the stories you love, from long 100k+ epics to fluffy one-shots, and actually enjoy it.

Let me show you how I (a non-native English speaker myself) read all my favorite fics, anytime, anywhere 💌

Option 1: Translate AO3 Fanfics Instantly on Your Phone

This is my personal go-to method to read English fanfiction on mobile, fast and stress-free. I read fanfics directly on Archive of Our Own (AO3) using the Google Chrome app on my phone.

Here’s how it works:

  • Open the fanfic using the Google Chrome app
  • Tap the three dots (menu)
  • Select “Translate”
  • Boom! Chrome auto-translates the fic into your language!
  • You can still scroll, bookmark, and even leave kudos ❤️

Why it’s great:

  • Works on all AO3 fics or other fanfiction websites
  • You can read on the bus, in bed, on your break… literally anywhere.
  • No copy-paste. No app-switching. Just instant reading joy 🥰

⚠️ Quick note:
The translation isn’t always perfect! This is still Google Translate, after all.
Sometimes you’ll get weird results (I always have Penelope (Pen) translated as Stylo in french… Yep, like the pen 🖊️).
And if the fic isn’t written very clearly to begin with, the translation might turn into total nonsense.
In a way, it’s a natural filter:
If you’re struggling too much to read the translation… maybe the fic wasn’t that great to begin with.

Option 2: Download and Translate the Fanfic (PDF or ePub)

If you prefer reading offline or want to save the fic for later, try this method:

  1. Go to the AO3 fanfic page
  2. Click on “Download” (top right)
  3. Choose PDF or ePub format
  4. Then:
    • Upload it to Google Docs and use the translate function (Tools > Translate document)
    • OR copy-paste parts into DeepL or Google Translate

Bonus tips:
You can read it later on your tablet, Kindle, or even print it out like a mini-novel. Great for long fics and slow-burn marathons. Perfect for binge-reading in peace 📖✨

Extra Tip: Start with “Comfort Reads” and Short Fics

If English fanfics feel intimidating at first, don’t start with 150k-word whump-heavy angst epics 😅

  • Search for Polin fluff (just an example of course 👀)
  • Look for comfort reading tags
  • Try fics under 5k words first
  • Prefer stories with clear, simple language (usually in the summary or tags)

Fanfiction is full of kind writers who tag their stories clearly. That means you can filter by language, length, genre (slow burn, hurt/comfort, etc.) and choose exactly what feels good.

The AO3 search filters are your best friend. Use them to find exactly what you need, whether it’s soft slow burns, AU stories…

Bonus: Check if a Translation Already Exists

Some fanfics are already translated by other readers!

Here’s how to check:

  • Use AO3’s Language filter to search fics written in your language
  • Look for tags like “Translation of…”
  • Search the fic title + “French translation” (or your language) on Wattpad, Tumblr, etc.

The fandom is full of kind people who love sharing fics in multiple languages 💕

Final Words: You Belong in the Fandom, Language or Not

Whether you’re fluent or using Google Translate, you belong here.

You deserve to enjoy every emotional fic rec, every alternate universe, every kiss, whispered line of slow-burn romance in a darkened hallway.

Fanfiction is made to be shared, reimagined, translated, loved, across all borders and languages.
So go ahead, open Chrome, pick a fic, hit “Translate”, and get reading.
You’re home here.

Happy reading!

Forever lost in Bridgerton fanfiction,
Dear W.
