Not gonna lie… I’m in my full-on Penelope escape era.

Whether it’s after the Whistledown reveal, a cruel rejection, or years of heartbreak, some of the best Polin fics start with the same twist: Penelope disappears (or leaves). And Colin? He suffers. A lot. 😈 (Don’t worry, it always ends well.)

But he isn’t the only one to suffer. These stories often shine a light on the Bridgerton family’s love for Penelope: Violet’s heartbreak, Eloise’s guilt, Anthony’s protectiveness. It’s tender, moving, and everything Pen never thought she deserved.

When Penelope Featherington finds herself still unmarried at the ripe old age of five and twenty, she is forced to become a governess for a wealthy little girl. Unfortunately, working as a governess affords a woman much fewer freedoms than Penelope is used to, meaning she has no control over the situation when her job brings her uncomfortably close to her ex-fiancé Colin.

Echoes of regret

“Entrapment” was something Penelope had saved Colin from, preventing him from blindingly marrying Marina Thompson and taking over the role of her twins’ father. The irony didn’t escape her. She had freed him from his terrible fate and now he felt trapped by her. What a sad pair they had become.

Catch or release

A reimagining of Season 3, part 2, that begins after Colin accuses Penelope of entrapment. After calling off the engagement, Penelope believes leaving Mayfair is best for Colin’s eventual happiness. A determined Colin follows after her with a singular goal: win back his wife.

Following the death of the Lord Archibald Featherington, his cousin, an old, ugly, grouchy man who had no qualms sending his insolent son off to the Americas becomes the new Baron. Eager to free himself of the burden of his cousin’s wife and daughters he sets about arranging a marriage for the eldest daughter with an old friend, paying the dowry for the second-born daughter and declaring their mother their burden as he saw them wed. The youngest daughter was trickier, he had no more friends in want of a wife and the chit was dowdy and a little young to be sure. When he hears his former neighbour is looking for a governess for their only daughter, he writes his young and intelligent cousin references and sends her off to start a new life. When the 1814 social season begins, and one Eloise Bridgerton tries to call on her friend she is informed that Miss Penelope has moved on and the Bridgerton family have never seen nor heard from their friend since. That is, until 8 years have passed, and the Lady Kathani Bridgerton is in search of a governess for her young daughter.

Penelope deals with Colin’s reaction to finding out she is Lady Whistledown. She’s pregnant and does not want to trap him. She spirals as she figures out what to do.

Consequence

After Colin’s entrapment accusations and a shocking revelation, Penelope decides leaving would be the best for everyone involved. No matter how much it breaks her.

The Disappearance of Penelope Featherington

Penelope Featherington leaves the many scandals of her life behind to start anew while Colin desperately searches to find her and bring her back home. When they are reunited, Colin finds a threat he had not anticipated and wonders if he’s too late to secure the affections of the woman he’s just realized is his love.

Searching for the moon and the sea

What if Penelope reacted differently when Colin accused her of trapping him? Penelope ran away from the Ton, giving Colin what she thought he desperately wanted: his freedom. She loves him too much to allow him to be trapped in a loveless marriage with her.
Colin never expected to lose Penelope; his anger towards her pushed her to leave him, promising he would never have to see her again.

Penelope is tired of waiting for life to happen to her. As a twenty three year old Spinster set on moving to the Country next year, she decides to take matters into her own hands and seduce Colin. He is her last shot of knowing any form of intimacy, even if she knows he will never marry her. Aubrey Hall has witnessed many things, but has it seen a Gently-bred women try her hand at the art of seduction? 😏

Entrapment: The Breaking Point

As you’ve probably noticed, the theme of entrapment comes back again and again in these stories.
That single line — when Colin accuses Penelope of trying to trap him into marriage — might have been just one moment in the show, but in fanfiction? It echoes loudly.
It becomes the breaking point. The reason she leaves.
And honestly… it should have been treated with more weight in canon.

Because for a girl who’s spent her whole life feeling invisible, unloved, and too much… being accused of manipulation by the one person she loved most?
That hurts in ways words can barely express.

But that’s also why these fics hit so hard and heal so beautifully.
